The lack of traction and the hard surface can increase the risk of slipping and falling, potentially causing injury to the horse and rider. It is important to wait for the arena to thaw and provide safe footing before attempting to gallop or engage in any high-speed activities. **

It is important to maintain the footing of the arena to provide a safe and comfortable surface for both the horse and rider. Trotting or cantering may be more appropriate for warming up the horse before riding in the arena. **

Sand arenas are low maintenance and provide good traction, but they can be hard on a horse's legs and may require more frequent grooming. Ultimately, the decision should be based on the specific needs of the riders and horses, as well as the climate and resources available for maintenance. **
